Kayaking the Apostle Islands, August 2003

Day 1 - Kayak Bayfield to Oak Island

The map for reference...

Getting ready to depart Bayfield on Thursday morning.
The wind made our initial crossing to Basswood island pretty tough, especially for a first day of paddling, but we survived, had lunch on Basswood, then made our way to Oak Island. These pictures were taken on the Southern tip of Oak where we stopped for a much deserved break after a total of 9 miles of paddling, with 1.5 miles to go.
Our camp on Oak Island.
Steve, the group advocate, calls up our kayak rental company and bitches them out about the crappy kayak that they gave us (and Dave and Denise got stuck in). They would bring us out a new Kayak the next morning.
Returning from a round of evening frisbee in the lake. We had to do a little bit of a hike and wade a good distance from shore to find a sandy bottom suitable for running and diving.
Day 1 sunset. We talked over our planned route with a couple sailing the islands. Then I think "Slightly-Above-Average-Dave" talked sailing with them for a while.
